About

One person, and what he does

RED EPOS is me, David Lyons. There is no team page on this site because there is no team. You speak to the person who does the work, which is the main advantage of a business this size and the reason I have kept it this way.

01/ What I do

What I do

I supply, install, program and support EPOS systems for hospitality and retail. Pubs, restaurants, takeaways, chip shops, cafés, convenience stores, off licences. That means specifying the right hardware, installing it, programming your menu properly so the buttons are where your staff expect them, training whoever is going to use it, and then answering the phone when something goes wrong.

More recently, most of the interesting work has been software. Not till software, which ICRTouch already do better than I would, but the connections between systems: getting the till talking to the accounts package, getting delivery orders onto the kitchen screen, getting stock in step between the shop and the website, getting data out of a closed system and into something a person will actually look at.

02/ Why the focus shifted

Why the focus has shifted

Because it is where the problem moved.

Ten years ago the hard part was the till itself. Now the tills are good. What is not good is that a small business runs five or six separate systems and none of them know the others exist, so somebody spends an hour a day being a human copy-and-paste. That is a fixable problem and hardly anybody is fixing it for businesses this size, because the software firms that do integration work are aimed at companies with an IT department.

Knowing EPOS from the inside is the part that makes this work. Till systems are closed, awkward and full of decisions that only make sense if you have taken one apart. Getting data out of one safely, without putting a trading day at risk, is not something you learn from documentation.

03/ And AI

Where I stand on AI

It is a real tool and I use it, in specific places, on top of information a business has already approved. Search across your own records with the source one click away. Comparing one period against another and pointing at what changed. Drafting something a person then reads and signs off.

What I will not do is put it in charge of a decision about a person, or tell you how much time it will save you when I have not measured it in your business. If someone quotes you a figure for that, ask them where it came from.

How the AI work is built

04/ How I work

How I work

Straight answers. If something cannot be done, or can be done but is not worth what it would cost you, I will say so. If a job is outside what I can do properly, I will say that too.

Fixed prices on integration work, so the number you agree is the number you pay. No prices on this website, because what a system costs genuinely depends on what it has to do, and a figure that ignores that is a figure you cannot rely on.

And the same person throughout. The one who quotes it is the one who builds it and the one who picks up the phone afterwards.
